Children who commit serious crimes should be punished as adults. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

I completely disagree with the view that child offenders who commit serious crimes should receive the same punishments as adults, as this approach ignores children’s developmental characteristics and fails to reduce juvenile crime effectively.

The primary reason is that children lack the full cognitive and moral capacity to understand the full consequences of their actions. Neurological research shows that the prefrontal cortex, the brain region responsible for decision-making, impulse control and judgement of long-term outcomes, does not fully mature until people reach their early 20s. Most juvenile serious offences, from gang-related assaults to impulsive violent acts, are committed under peer pressure, poor family supervision or temporary emotional arousal, rather than premeditated, calculated malice that defines adult criminal intent. Punishing them with adult sentences, such as long prison terms, would treat them as fully rational moral agents, which contradicts basic facts of human development.

Furthermore, adult punishments do little to rehabilitate young offenders, and often make them more dangerous. Juveniles sent to adult prisons are 3 times more likely to reoffend after release, according to criminology studies, as they are exposed to hardened adult criminals who teach them more advanced offending skills, rather than receiving age-appropriate education and psychological intervention. A better alternative is tailored juvenile justice systems: for example, Norway’s system focuses on restorative justice for under-18 offenders, requiring them to meet victims, complete community service and receive counselling, and it has one of the lowest juvenile reoffending rates globally at only 20%.

Admittedly, serious crimes cause great harm to victims, so it is reasonable to hold child offenders accountable, but accountability does not mean equal punishment. Age-appropriate consequences that balance victim redress and rehabilitation are far more just and effective in the long term.
