The best way to understand other cultures is to work in a multinational organization. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is sometimes argued that taking up a position in a multinational company is the optimal approach to learning about different foreign cultures. While working in such an organization allows people to interact with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, I completely disagree that this is the best way to understand other cultures, as more immersive and authentic alternatives exist.

Admittedly, multinational workplaces can offer some exposure to cultural differences. Employees may collaborate with peers from various countries, observe different communication styles in meetings, or learn about foreign festivals through workplace events. For example, a staff member at a global tech firm might notice that Japanese colleagues tend to use more formal, indirect language in emails compared to their more straightforward American counterparts, giving them a surface-level insight into differing social norms.

However, this work-based exposure is often limited and superficial. Most interactions in multinational companies are task-focused, centred on meeting project deadlines rather than exploring deep cultural values such as family traditions, religious customs, or local community norms. Additionally, workplaces tend to promote a unified corporate culture that can overshadow individual cultural traits, as staff adapt to shared professional expectations rather than displaying their native cultural practices.

Far more effective ways to understand other cultures include living in a local community abroad or forming deep personal friendships with people from different backgrounds. For instance, when I volunteered at a rural school in Thailand for 3 months, I participated in daily family meals, local temple ceremonies and village festivals, learning about core cultural values of collectivism and respect for elders that I would never have encountered in a formal office setting. Such immersive experiences let people engage with culture in everyday, unscripted contexts, providing a far more rounded understanding than professional work in a multinational firm.

In conclusion, although working in a multinational organization offers some limited cultural exposure, it is not the best method. Immersive, personal engagement with a culture outside of a work environment allows for a much deeper, more authentic understanding of other ways of life.
