Some people think a job not only provides income but also a social life. Others think it is better to develop a social life with people you do not work with. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Work and social connection have long been seen as closely linked, yet opinions diverge on whether workplaces are a suitable setting to build social lives.

Those who view jobs as a source of social life argue that colleagues share large amounts of time and common work experiences, making it easy to form genuine bonds. Full-time workers typically spend over one-third of their waking hours with teammates, navigating shared deadlines, project challenges and small daily interactions that naturally build trust. For example, a new graduate joining a marketing firm may find lunchtime chats and post-work team outings help them settle into a new city quickly, removing the pressure of making friends in unfamiliar settings outside work. Such connections also improve work satisfaction, as friendly relationships with coworkers make daily tasks feel less stressful.

On the other hand, many believe social lives are better separated from work, to avoid boundary issues. Close friendships with colleagues can create bias in work decisions, or lead to awkward situations if professional relationships sour: a person who socialises heavily with their manager, for instance, may be accused of favouritism by other team members, while a falling out with a work friend can make daily office interactions uncomfortable. Socialising outside work also lets people explore interests unrelated to their jobs, connecting with others over hobbies like hiking, painting or community volunteering, which gives them a necessary break from work-related conversations and stress.

In my opinion, it is healthy to maintain a balance. Casual friendly connections at work make daily work more pleasant, but relying solely on colleagues for social life limits personal growth and risks professional complications. Building separate social circles outside work lets people develop a more well-rounded identity beyond their job, which is better for long-term wellbeing.
