It is better for a country to spend money on skills training and vocational training for practical work (e.g. car maintenance, hairdressing) than on university education. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is sometimes argued that national budgets should prioritise practical vocational training over university education. While I accept that vocational skills are valuable to society, I completely disagree that they deserve more funding than universities, as both sectors play irreplaceable roles in a country’s development.

On the one hand, vocational training addresses immediate gaps in the labour market. Courses for professions like car maintenance, hairdressing or construction equip people with job-ready skills in a relatively short time, reducing youth unemployment and supporting essential local services. For example, countries like Germany have successful dual education systems that combine vocational training with work placements, creating a highly skilled trades workforce and keeping youth unemployment among the lowest in Europe. This shows that targeted spending on practical training delivers clear economic and social benefits.

However, this does not mean universities should receive less investment. University education drives long-term innovation and progress, training professionals such as doctors, engineers, scientists and teachers who solve complex national challenges. Without strong university systems, countries would lack the expertise to develop new technologies, advance healthcare or manage public institutions. For instance, government funding for university medical and engineering research has led to breakthroughs in renewable energy and public health that vocational training alone cannot produce. A balanced economy needs both skilled tradespeople and highly educated specialists.

In conclusion, although vocational training is vital for practical employment and everyday services, it would be short-sighted to fund it at the expense of universities. Governments should support both equally to build a well-rounded, prosperous society.

立场清晰贯穿全文,没有模棱两可;
论证兼顾双方,既有让步也有核心立论,逻辑完整;
例子贴合主题(德国双元制、大学科研突破),符合“结合自身知识/经验”的要求;
