Some people think that it is a good idea for people to continue working in their old age. Do you agree or disagree?
It is sometimes argued that remaining in employment in later life is a positive choice for elderly people. While I acknowledge the potential mental benefits of continued work for seniors, I mostly disagree with this view because it risks harming their physical health and restricting younger generations’ career opportunities.
On the one hand, staying in work can support older people’s cognitive and emotional wellbeing. Many structured jobs provide routine, social interaction and a sense of purpose, which reduces the risk of loneliness and age-related mental decline such as dementia. For example, a part-time community librarian role in my neighbourhood allows several retirees to stay connected to local residents and feel valued, rather than staying isolated at home after leaving their full-time careers.
On the other hand, forcing or encouraging seniors to work past standard retirement age brings clear drawbacks. Firstly, ageing naturally reduces physical stamina and reaction speed, making older people unsuitable for many demanding roles, from manual construction to high-pressure medical positions, which may even lead to workplace accidents. Secondly, a competitive job market already struggles to absorb millions of young graduates each year; if older employees hold senior positions for longer, it will create bottlenecks for younger workers to advance in their fields, slowing social mobility.
In conclusion, although limited, low-intensity work can bring mental benefits to some retirees, encouraging the majority of elderly people to continue working is unwise, as it threatens their health and limits opportunities for the young.
