An increasing number of people are choosing to have cosmetic surgery in order to improve their appearance. Why do people have operations to change the way they look? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

The rising popularity of cosmetic surgery has sparked widespread discussion about its drivers and societal impact.

There are two core reasons behind this trend. First, social media and prevailing aesthetic standards fuel appearance anxiety: platforms are flooded with edited, flawless images of celebrities and influencers, leading many to believe that refined facial features or a sculpted body will bring more social approval, romantic opportunities, or even career advantages. For example, a 2023 survey in South Korea found 62% of young job applicants believed minor cosmetic adjustments would increase their chances of securing corporate roles. Second, the growing affordability and accessibility of cosmetic procedures have lowered the threshold: what was once a luxury for the wealthy is now available to ordinary people via installment payment plans and minimally invasive techniques that require little recovery time.

In my view, this is largely a negative development. While cosmetic surgery can help people with congenital defects or accident scars rebuild confidence, for most people chasing arbitrary beauty standards, it brings far more risks than benefits. For one thing, any surgical procedure carries inherent health risks, including infection, nerve damage, or permanent disfigurement from botched operations; there are frequent reports of unlicensed clinics causing lifelong health damage to patients. For another, over-reliance on surgical changes to appearance distorts people’s perception of self-worth: it encourages people to equate value with superficial looks, rather than cultivating inner qualities like ability, kindness, and resilience.

In conclusion, social pressure and accessible services drive the boom in cosmetic surgery, but overall it is an undesirable trend that prioritizes superficial appearance over genuine self-acceptance and health.

完整覆盖“原因分析+利弊判断”两个设问,没有遗漏任务要求;
