In the past, people stored knowledge in books. Nowadays, people store knowledge on the Internet. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

The shift from storing knowledge in printed books to hosting it on the Internet has sparked debate about its overall value. In my view, while this trend carries minor drawbacks, its advantages are far more substantial.

Admittedly, online knowledge storage has two notable downsides. First, misinformation spreads easily on unregulated online platforms, as almost anyone can post content without professional verification, which may mislead learners. For example, false health advice on unverified websites has caused some users to adopt harmful treatments instead of seeking professional medical help. Second, long-term reading of fragmented online content tends to reduce people’s ability to conduct deep, systematic reading of academic works, as hyperlinks and constant notifications easily distract attention.

However, the benefits of this development outweigh these problems significantly. The most prominent advantage is the unparalleled accessibility of online knowledge. Unlike physical books that are limited by print runs, geographic location and cost, online resources are available to almost anyone with an internet connection, often for free. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, students in remote rural areas in China could access free open courses from top universities via the Internet, which would have been impossible with only printed books. Additionally, online knowledge storage supports diverse, interactive forms of content, including instructional videos, simulated experiments and updated real-time data, which help people understand complex concepts far more effectively than static text in books.

In conclusion, although online knowledge storage has issues with misinformation and potential distraction, its ability to democratize access to knowledge and provide richer learning experiences makes it a largely positive development.

用词符合学术写作规范,避免口语化表达,使用了unregulated, unparalleled accessibility, democratize等适配话题的词汇;
例子贴合论点且符合“个人知识/经验相关”的题目要求,没有使用空泛的论述;
Task Response、Coherence and Cohesion、Lexical Resource、Grammatical Range and Accuracy四项评分标准的要求。
