Nowadays, many people use the Internet to get medical advice instead of going to see a doctor. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

These days, a growing number of people turn to online resources for medical guidance rather than consulting a qualified doctor in person. This trend stems from two core reasons, and in my view, it is overall a harmful development.

The primary causes of this shift are convenience and cost efficiency. First, accessing medical advice online eliminates the need to travel to clinics, wait in long queues, or book appointments weeks in advance; people can get answers to health concerns in minutes, at any time, even for minor symptoms like a mild cold or seasonal allergy. Second, in many regions, in-person medical consultations are expensive, especially for people without comprehensive health insurance, while most online health information is available for free. For example, many young working adults in China now search for symptom explanations on health platforms when they feel unwell, as they cannot afford to take time off work or pay high private clinic fees.

However, I believe this trend brings more risks than benefits, making it a negative development. Most online medical advice is generalized, not tailored to an individual’s specific medical history, age, or underlying conditions, so misdiagnosis is extremely common. In severe cases, following incorrect online advice can delay proper treatment for dangerous conditions such as heart disease or cancer. For instance, there are frequent reports of people mistaking early stroke symptoms for ordinary fatigue based on online content, leading to permanent disability or even death when they fail to seek timely professional care.

In conclusion, people seek online medical advice for its convenience and low cost, but the high risk of misinformation and misdiagnosis makes this a negative trend overall.

两个设问都给出明确回应,没有遗漏任务要求;
例子符合生活常识,具有说服力,避免空泛论述;
