Nowadays, students can easily access information online, so libraries are no longer necessary. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

I completely disagree with the claim that libraries have become unnecessary for students, despite the widespread availability of online information. In fact, libraries continue to serve irreplaceable academic and social functions that online resources cannot replicate.

Admittedly, online platforms offer unparalleled convenience for accessing information: students can retrieve journal articles, e-books and lecture notes from anywhere at any time, which is particularly useful for quick fact-checking or preliminary research. However, this convenience does not negate the value of libraries. First, libraries provide a curated, distraction-free study environment purpose-built for focused learning. Unlike home or public spaces where social media, household chores and casual interruptions frequently disrupt concentration, libraries enforce quiet norms that enable students to engage in deep, sustained study. For example, during my final year of university, 70% of my exam preparation was completed in my campus library, as I was 30% more productive there than when studying in my dormitory where roommates often disrupted me.

Second, libraries hold exclusive, reliable physical resources and offer professional academic support that are not freely accessible online. Many rare academic books, archival materials and special collections are only available in library holdings, and librarians are trained to help students locate credible sources, refine research topics and avoid misinformation that is rampant on unvetted online platforms. For instance, when writing my undergraduate thesis on 19th-century local poetry, I accessed 3 rare poetry anthologies in my university library that had no digitized copies available online, which formed the core primary sources of my paper.

In conclusion, while online information access brings great convenience, libraries remain essential for students as dedicated study spaces and providers of unique resources and expert support, so they will never be replaced by online resources.
