In many cities, green spaces and parks have been replaced with houses. Is this a positive or negative development?

Nowadays, numerous urban regions have replaced public parks and green zones with residential buildings to address housing shortages. While this can partially ease accommodation pressure, I believe it is overall a negative development that brings long-term harm to cities and their residents.

Admittedly, constructing more houses on former green land may temporarily alleviate the problem of insufficient housing in fast-growing cities. For instance, in some overcrowded megacities where land resources are extremely scarce, replacing unused small parks with high-rise apartments can provide homes for hundreds of low-income families, reducing the number of homeless people to some extent.

However, this practice causes far more severe drawbacks. First, the loss of green spaces directly damages urban environmental quality. Parks and trees play a vital role in absorbing carbon dioxide, filtering air pollutants and mitigating the urban heat island effect. A clear example is that many districts in my city which demolished community parks for residential buildings ten years ago now suffer from 20% higher summer temperatures and more frequent smog compared to areas with intact green facilities. Second, the absence of public parks deprives residents of accessible spaces for outdoor exercise and social interaction. Without nearby green areas, people, especially children and the elderly, are less likely to take regular walks or join community activities, leading to a sedentary lifestyle and weakened neighborhood bonds.

In conclusion, despite the short-term benefit of increasing housing supply, replacing urban green spaces with houses is a negative development that threatens environmental health and public well-being. City planners should prioritize balanced land use rather than sacrificing green zones for accommodation.
