I completely disagree with the view that scientific research is a waste of time and money, as it is the core driver of long-term human progress, despite the fact that some studies seem to bring no immediate returns.
Admittedly, a small portion of scientific exploration does fail to produce tangible, short-term benefits. For instance, some fundamental research into quantum mechanics or deep space may take decades or even centuries to show practical value, which makes members of the public who expect quick returns label these efforts as a waste. However, it is short-sighted to judge the value of research solely by immediate gains.
First and foremost, scientific research lays the foundation for solutions to pressing global challenges. For example, decades of basic research into mRNA technology, which was once considered a niche field with no clear commercial use, became the basis of effective COVID-19 vaccines that saved millions of lives worldwide in 2020. Without the seemingly "unproductive" years of prior research, the world would have been unable to respond to the pandemic so rapidly.
Secondly, scientific advances driven by research bring continuous, widespread improvements to daily life. Research into renewable energy technologies, such as high-efficiency solar panels and large-capacity batteries, has drastically cut the cost of clean energy, helping reduce global carbon emissions and provide affordable electricity to remote, off-grid regions. Even research that does not lead to direct applications expands human knowledge, inspiring future generations to explore the unknown.
In conclusion, while a tiny share of scientific research does not deliver instant benefits, its overall value to human survival, health and development is immeasurable, so funding and supporting scientific research is never a waste of resources.
