The government should invest more money in teaching science rather than other subjects to help a country make progress and develop. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is argued that government funding for education should prioritize science subjects over other fields to drive national progress. While scientific education lays a critical foundation for technological and economic advancement, I disagree that it deserves more investment than other subjects, as balanced educational investment is the key to sustainable development.

Admittedly, prioritizing science teaching brings tangible economic and technological benefits. Scientific literacy nurtures engineers, researchers and medical professionals who drive innovation: for example, increased funding for STEM education in South Korea from the 1970s onwards cultivated the skilled workforce that built its global semiconductor and electronics industries, lifting the country from post-war poverty to high-income status. Scientific advances also improve public health, food security and disaster response, all core pillars of national development.

However, defunding non-science subjects would cause long-term harm to social and cultural progress, which is equally vital for a country’s development. Subjects such as history, literature and the arts build shared cultural identity, social cohesion and critical thinking among citizens. For instance, widespread investment in humanities education in Nordic countries supports their high levels of social trust, transparent governance and stable civic life, which are foundational to their consistent top rankings in global happiness and development indices. Furthermore, vocational and creative subjects cultivate a diverse workforce: the thriving creative industries in the UK, which contribute over £100 billion annually to its economy, depend on education in art, design and media, not pure science.

In conclusion, while science teaching is essential for technological and economic growth, governments should allocate balanced funding to all subject areas, as non-science fields make irreplaceable contributions to social stability, cultural vitality and long-term national progress.
