For instance, pharmaceutical giants like Pfizer have invested heavily in mRNA technology, enabling the rapid development and mass rollout of COVID-19 vaccines at a speed that many state-run research institutions could hardly match. Besides, corporate funding reduces the financial burden on public budgets, allowing governments to allocate resources to other livelihood areas such as education and poverty alleviation.
However, the downsides are more concerning. First, private research is inherently profit-oriented, which leads to biased research agendas.
