Many people around the world use social media every day to keep in touch with other people and news events. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

The ubiquity of social media as a daily tool for social connection and news access is a defining modern trend. In my view, while it carries notable drawbacks, its transformative benefits for global connectivity and information democratisation ultimately outweigh its downsides.

The primary advantages of social media are twofold. First, it eliminates geographic barriers to maintaining relationships: for instance, international students or migrant workers can use platforms like WeChat or Instagram to share daily moments with family back home in real time, a feat that required expensive long-distance calls or delayed letters two decades ago. Second, it democratises news access, allowing marginalised groups to share underreported events that mainstream media may overlook. During the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, for example, social media footage of grassroots demonstrations helped spread global awareness of racial injustice far faster than traditional news cycles could.

Admittedly, social media has clear downsides. Excessive daily use can erode in-person social skills, with many young people reporting anxiety about face-to-face interactions after relying on text-based communication for years. It also enables the rapid spread of misinformation: during the COVID-19 pandemic, false claims about fake cures circulated widely on platforms, leading to harmful public health choices. However, these issues are not inherent to social media itself; they can be mitigated through digital literacy education and platform content regulation, rather than dismissing the technology entirely.

In conclusion, although social media poses risks to social interaction and information accuracy, its unparalleled ability to connect people across distances and amplify unheard voices makes its advantages more significant than its disadvantages, provided users and regulators address its flaws responsibly.
