Some people think governments should focus on reducing environmental pollution and housing problems to help people prevent illness and disease. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is argued that authorities ought to prioritise curbing environmental contamination and resolving housing shortages to protect public health from illnesses. I completely agree with this view, as these two domains are fundamental root causes of a wide range of preventable health issues.

To begin with, reducing environmental pollution directly cuts exposure to major disease triggers. Toxic air, polluted water and soil contaminated with industrial waste are proven to cause chronic respiratory conditions, cardiovascular diseases, waterborne infections and even certain cancers. For instance, in many rapidly industrialising cities, prolonged exposure to high PM2.5 levels leads to surging cases of childhood asthma and adult lung cancer. If governments enforce stricter emission regulations for factories and vehicles, and improve waste water treatment systems, the incidence of these pollution-related illnesses can drop significantly, reducing the overall burden on public health systems.

Furthermore, addressing housing problems is essential to eliminating health risks linked to poor living conditions. Overcrowded, damp or poorly ventilated substandard housing creates ideal environments for the spread of contagious diseases such as tuberculosis, influenza and skin infections, while homelessness leaves people with no protection from extreme weather and no access to basic hygiene. For example, public health data from the UK shows that people living in overcrowded social housing are 3 times more likely to develop recurring respiratory infections than those in adequate accommodation. When governments invest in affordable, quality public housing and enforce housing safety standards, they can reduce these avoidable health risks for vulnerable populations.

In conclusion, I fully support the idea that governments should prioritise pollution reduction and housing improvement, as these measures address the core environmental and social determinants of preventable illness, delivering far-reaching long-term benefits for public health.

(To begin with, Furthermore, For instance, In conclusion),段落衔接流畅。
