Some people say that in the modern world, getting old is entirely bad. Others believe that old people's life nowadays is much better than in the past. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

🤖 作文

Views differ on whether later life is completely negative in contemporary society, or if senior citizens enjoy far better lives than previous generations. While modern ageing brings undeniable hardships, I believe older people’s lives have improved dramatically compared to the past.

On the one hand, advocates of the view that modern ageing is entirely bad point to unique social and economic pressures. The erosion of extended family networks means many elderly people now live alone, facing chronic loneliness and isolation, a problem less common when multi-generational households were the norm. Rapid technological change also leaves many seniors digitally excluded: they may struggle to access essential online services, from medical appointments to banking, without support. Additionally, rising costs of aged care and unstable pension systems in many countries mean older people often face greater financial insecurity than working-age groups. For example, a 2023 UK report found 18% of pensioners lived in relative poverty, unable to afford heating or adequate nutrition.

However, I side with those who argue later life is far better today. Medical advances mean common age-related conditions, from cataracts to joint pain, are now easily treatable, allowing seniors to stay active and independent far longer than in the past. Government welfare systems, even with flaws, also provide a safety net that barely existed a century ago, when most elderly people relied entirely on their children for support or faced destitution. For instance, my 78-year-old grandmother travels internationally, takes online painting classes, and manages her health through free public healthcare, a lifestyle unthinkable for someone of her age when her own mother was elderly in the 1970s.

In conclusion, while modern ageing brings loneliness, exclusion and financial stress, these are outweighed by unprecedented health and welfare benefits that make later life far more fulfilling than it was for previous generations.
