Some think most crime is the result of circumstances, eg., poverty and other social problems. Others believe that most crimes are committed by people who are bad by nature. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People have divergent views on the root cause of crime, with some attributing it to external social circumstances and others blaming inherent bad nature. While both arguments have their justifications, I believe social disadvantages are the primary driver of most illegal acts.

Those who support the "bad nature" view argue that some individuals are born with traits that make them prone to crime. For instance, research in criminal psychology has found that a small number of people show persistent aggressive, impulsive or empathy-lacking traits from childhood, which may lead to violent or manipulative offences regardless of their upbringing. High-profile white-collar crimes, where wealthy, well-educated people commit fraud or embezzlement even with material comforts, are also cited as proof that some choose crime out of inherent greed rather than need.

However, the link between adverse social circumstances and crime is far more strongly supported by evidence. Poverty, lack of access to education, systemic discrimination and broken community support often push people into offending as a survival strategy or a result of limited choices. For example, in areas with high unemployment and underfunded public services, rates of theft, drug dealing and street violence are consistently higher, not because residents are naturally bad, but because legal opportunities to build a stable life are scarce. Long-term studies also show that most young offenders who grow up in deprived backgrounds abandon criminal behaviour when they gain access to stable jobs and social support.

In my view, while a tiny minority of crimes may be linked to inherent personal flaws, the vast majority of offences stem from preventable social problems. Addressing inequality, improving access to education and welfare, and building supportive communities is far more effective at reducing crime than simply blaming bad nature.
