Nowadays, parents put too much pressure on their children to succeed. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or negative development for children?

🤖 作文

In many contemporary societies, children are being pushed extremely hard by their parents to achieve academic and personal success. This essay will first discuss two core causes of this trend, and then argue that this is overall a harmful development for young people.

Two main factors drive this excessive parental pressure. First, today’s increasingly competitive job market means parents believe strong academic credentials and extra-curricular achievements are the only guarantee of a stable, well-paid career. For example, many East Asian parents force children to attend extra tutoring and skill-building classes from primary school, worried that lower grades will bar their children from top universities and lucrative roles. Second, many parents see children’s success as a reflection of their own parenting ability, and subconsciously push children to meet their own unfulfilled life goals, rather than respecting children’s individual interests.

In my view, this pressure is overwhelmingly a negative development. While mild expectations can motivate children, excessive pressure causes severe long-term harm. A 2023 UNESCO study found that adolescents facing constant parental academic pressure are 3 times more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression than their peers, with many reporting they feel worthless if they fail to meet high targets. Furthermore, this pressure stifles children’s independent development: my cousin was forced to study finance by his parents despite his passion for art, and he dropped out of university in his second year after developing chronic stress, losing both years of study and the chance to pursue his talents at an early age.

In conclusion, parental anxiety about future competition and misplaced personal pride cause this overpressure on children, and the resulting mental health risks and lost personal potential make this a clearly damaging trend.
