Extreme sports such as skydiving and skiing are very dangerous and should be banned. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?
It is sometimes argued that high-risk activities like skydiving and alpine skiing are so hazardous that they should be prohibited by authorities. I completely disagree with this view, as the risks of these sports are well-managed, and they bring unique benefits to participants.
First, regulated extreme sports are far less dangerous than many people assume. Official extreme sports operators are required to follow strict safety protocols: for example, professional skydiving centres provide certified instructors, regularly inspected equipment, and hours of mandatory training for first-time participants. Statistics show that the fatality rate for tandem skydiving is just 0.006 per 1,000 jumps, which is far lower than the risk of fatal accidents from everyday activities such as driving on motorways. The vast majority of injuries linked to these sports happen to untrained people who take unsupervised risks, not to people who follow formal guidance.
Second, extreme sports offer unique mental and physical benefits that justify personal choice. These activities push people to overcome fear, build resilience and improve physical fitness: for instance, people who complete a skydive often report long-term increases in confidence that helps them deal with challenges in work and daily life. Banning these activities would also remove a legitimate recreational choice, and set an unreasonable precedent for restricting adult autonomy in low-statistical-risk leisure pursuits.
In conclusion, while extreme sports carry inherent risks, proper regulation eliminates most dangers, and the value they bring means a full ban is entirely unjustified.
