I completely disagree with the view that university courses should prioritize future developments over learning about the past, as the two are not mutually exclusive, and understanding historical context is essential to shaping responsible, well-informed progress.
Focusing solely on future developments without grounding in the past risks repeating costly mistakes. For fields like public policy, civil engineering, or medicine, past failures and successes provide critical evidence for what works and what causes harm. For example, a student of urban planning who ignores the history of poorly designed mid-20th century public housing projects, which isolated low-income communities and exacerbated inequality, could easily replicate those same harmful designs when working on future smart city projects. Past knowledge also forms the foundational framework that all future innovation builds upon. Computer science students cannot develop advanced artificial intelligence systems without first learning the decades-old fundamental principles of coding, algorithm design, and early computing breakthroughs that form the basis of modern technology.
That is not to say future-focused content has no place in university curricula. Courses should indeed incorporate emerging trends, from renewable energy technology to evolving digital privacy regulations, to prepare students for the workforce. But these future-oriented lessons are only effective when paired with context from the past. For instance, studying past industrial transitions helps students understand how to manage the job displacement risks that come with new AI and automation technologies.
