It is argued that news is irrelevant to ordinary people’s daily lives, making time spent on newspapers and TV news programs a waste. I completely disagree with this view, as news offers practical guidance and cultivates people’s civic awareness.

First, news covering public policies and local events is closely tied to individuals’ immediate interests, helping people make sensible daily decisions. For example, when local meteorological news forecasts an approaching typhoon, residents can stock up on daily necessities and avoid unnecessary outdoor trips in advance; when official news announces adjustments to public transport routes or new social welfare policies, people can plan their commutes and apply for eligible benefits accordingly. Without access to such information, people may face avoidable inconvenience or even losses.

Second, following news nurtures engaged citizenship, which connects individuals to the wider community they live in. News about community construction plans, educational reform or local environmental governance allows residents to understand public affairs, voice reasonable opinions and participate in collective decision-making. For instance, last year I learned from local TV news that a waste sorting facility would be built near my neighborhood. I joined other residents to put forward constructive suggestions on its location and operation to the local council, which eventually optimized the project for all stakeholders. If people ignore news, they will be disconnected from public life and lose the chance to contribute to their community.

In conclusion, news is highly relevant to people’s lives, providing practical life guidance and linking individuals to public affairs. It is never a waste of time to follow reliable news.
