The best way to make society happier is to ensure that the richest and poorest people have the smallest differences in earnings. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Narrowing the earnings gap between the wealthiest and most impoverished groups is often proposed as the optimal approach to boosting societal happiness, but I disagree that this is the best method, as it neglects core drivers of wellbeing and risks harming social vitality.
Admittedly, reducing extreme income inequality can ease widespread resentment. When the lowest earners cannot afford basic needs like healthcare or housing while billionaires accumulate excessive wealth, social tension rises, eroding public trust. For example, nations with severe wealth gaps often record higher rates of mental illness and crime linked to financial desperation, so narrowing this divide can remove a major source of unhappiness.
However, minimal earnings differences are not the key to a happier society, and can even reduce life satisfaction. First, absolute living standards matter more than relative equality. If forced income parity removes rewards for hard work and innovation, economic growth slows, leaving everyone poorer overall. For instance, historical attempts at strictly equal pay in some planned economies led to low productivity and widespread shortages of goods and services, which lowered public happiness far more than modest inequality does in thriving market economies. Second, other factors contribute far more to societal happiness: reliable public services, strong community bonds, fair legal systems and work-life balance. Countries like Finland consistently top global happiness rankings not because they have the smallest earnings gaps, but because they provide universal free education and healthcare, low corruption, and strong social support for all residents.
In conclusion, while reducing extreme income inequality can alleviate some social unhappiness, it is not the best way to build a happier society. Prioritising broad access to essential services and fair opportunities for all creates more lasting, widespread wellbeing.
