People believe they should be able to keep all the money they earn and not pay taxes to the state. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
I completely disagree with the view that people should keep all their earnings and pay no taxes to the state, as taxation is the fundamental pillar of functional, fair societies that delivers shared benefits no individual can secure alone. Firstly, taxes fund universal public services that form the backbone of daily life. Governments rely on tax revenue to build and maintain roads, public hospitals, schools, and emergency services that everyone uses, regardless of income. For example, in my country, public primary and secondary schools are fully funded by taxes, giving children from low-income families equal access to free education, which would be unaffordable for millions if these services were only run for private profit. Without tax contributions, these essential systems would collapse, leaving even high earners without reliable infrastructure or safety nets. Secondly, taxation reduces social inequality by redistributing wealth to support vulnerable groups. Progressive tax systems require higher earners to contribute a larger share, which funds welfare payments, disability support, and public housing for people facing hardship. During the 2020 pandemic, for instance, tax-funded wage subsidy schemes around the world prevented millions of households from falling into poverty when businesses were forced to close. Admittedly, people work hard for their income, and excessively high tax rates can discourage enterprise. However, a reasonable, well-regulated tax system does not take away people's earnings unfairly – it invests them in a stable, supportive society that allows people to earn and thrive safely. In conclusion, paying taxes is not an unfair burden, but a shared responsibility that benefits every member of society.
