Some people think that charity organizations should only help people in their own country. However, others believe these organizations should aid people in great need wherever they live. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People have differing views about whether charitable groups should limit their support to domestic citizens or extend help to vulnerable populations globally. In my opinion, while prioritising local communities has practical benefits, charity organisations ought to provide assistance based on the severity of need regardless of national boundaries.

Those who argue charities should focus exclusively on their home country often highlight two core reasons. First, these organisations typically receive a large portion of their funding from local taxpayers and individual donors, who naturally expect their contributions to address pressing issues at home, such as homelessness, child poverty and inadequate healthcare for disadvantaged local groups. Second, concentrating aid domestically reduces logistical costs and oversight challenges, ensuring that more resources directly reach recipients rather than being spent on international transport, cross-border administration or corruption risks in distant regions. For example, many local food banks in the UK operate with minimal overheads, allowing over 90% of donated food to go to low-income British families.

However, supporters of global aid maintain that humanitarian need should not be restricted by nationality. Many crises, such as earthquake devastation, widespread famine or epidemic outbreaks, leave populations in some countries far more vulnerable than disadvantaged groups in wealthier nations, and these communities often lack even basic access to food, shelter or medical care that local safety nets in developed countries provide. International charitable aid can be life-saving in these situations: for instance, the Red Cross’s emergency response to the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes delivered critical medical supplies and temporary shelter to millions of displaced people who had no other source of support, a scale of need that far outstripped what local domestic charities in those countries could address alone.

In my view, a balanced approach is optimal. Charities can allocate a majority of their resources to local causes to meet donor expectations and tackle domestic hardship, while reserving a dedicated portion of funds for cross-border emergency aid. This ensures they fulfil their responsibilities to their home communities while upholding the core charitable principle of alleviating the greatest human suffering, wherever it occurs.
