Some people say that advertising has positive economic effects. Others think it has negative social effects because it will make people feel dissatisfied with who they are and what they have. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
There is a debate over the impacts of advertising: while it brings tangible economic benefits, it is also blamed for triggering social dissatisfaction. In my view, its economic value is undeniable, but its social downsides can be mitigated with proper regulation.
On the one hand, advertising serves as a core driver of modern economic growth. For enterprises, targeted advertisements efficiently raise brand awareness, helping newly launched products quickly reach potential consumers and expand market size. For instance, during global shopping festivals such as Black Friday, precise digital advertising can boost platform sales by over 30% year on year, stimulating production, creating jobs in sectors like marketing, logistics and retail, and forming a virtuous cycle of market activity. For consumers, advertising delivers clear product information, reducing the time spent comparing options and lowering transaction costs, which further smoothes market operation.
On the other hand, inappropriate advertising does cause negative social impacts. Many commercial ads deliberately present idealised, unattainable lifestyles and perfect appearance standards: beauty ads often use over-edited models to imply that specific products can bring flawless skin or a slim figure, while luxury ads associate expensive goods with superior social status. This easily makes audiences, especially vulnerable teenagers, feel anxious about their own appearance or living conditions, pushing them to overspend on unnecessary products to chase the unrealistic image created by ads, leading to low self-esteem or impulsive consumption.
In my opinion, these social problems do not negate advertising’s economic value. The root cause is unregulated false or misleading content, rather than advertising itself. If governments enforce strict rules to ban exaggerated publicity and require clear disclaimers for edited advertising content, advertising can continue driving economic growth without damaging public mental wellbeing.
