Some people think that schools should select students according to their academic abilities, while others believe that it is better to have students with different abilities studying together. Discuss both views and state your own opinion.

Nowadays, debate persists over whether schools should stream students by academic ability or teach mixed-ability cohorts together. Both approaches have merit, but I believe mixed-ability classes deliver more well-rounded long-term benefits for all students.

Supporters of ability-based selection argue that it allows tailored teaching pace and content. For high-achieving students, they can access advanced curricula without being held back by slower peers, while students who struggle academically can receive more foundational support without feeling overwhelmed by overly demanding lessons. For instance, many grammar schools in the UK that select students via entrance exams report consistently high exam results, as teaching can be targeted to the homogeneous ability level of the class.

On the other hand, mixed-ability learning fosters invaluable social and collaborative skills. When students of varied academic strengths, as well as different talents in art, sport or practical skills, study together, they learn to appreciate diverse strengths, support peers weaker in certain areas and draw on each other’s strengths. This mirrors the real adult world, where people must cooperate with others of varying competencies. For example, in a group project, a student strong in maths can lead data analysis, while a creative peer can design presentations, letting everyone contribute meaningfully and build mutual respect.

In my view, while ability grouping may boost short-term test scores, it risks entrenching inequality and depriving students of key social learning. Mixed-ability classes nurture both academic progress through peer tutoring and essential life skills, making them the better model for holistic education.
