It is argued by some educators that international student exchange programmes bring benefits to every secondary school pupil. While such schemes may have certain drawbacks, I believe their advantages are far more significant.

Admittedly, teenage exchange participants can face two main challenges. Firstly, studying abroad temporarily often incurs high costs, including tuition fees at the host school, accommodation and travel expenses, which may place a heavy financial burden on low-income families. Secondly, adolescents, who are still developing emotional regulation skills, may struggle with culture shock and homesickness in an unfamiliar environment, potentially leading to anxiety or a temporary decline in academic performance.

Nevertheless, these downsides are outweighed by the lifelong merits of exchange experiences. First and foremost, living and studying in a foreign country immerses teenagers in a new language environment, which is far more effective for language acquisition than classroom learning alone. For instance, a 2023 survey of 1,200 secondary exchange students in China found that over 85% of them reached an intermediate level of foreign language proficiency within six months, compared to just 20% of their peers who only learnt the language at home. Furthermore, exchange programmes foster independence and cross-cultural competence, core skills for the globalised workforce. Teenagers have to manage daily tasks, from budgeting to resolving conflicts with host families, on their own, and they learn to respect diverse perspectives when interacting with local peers. These qualities often give them a competitive edge when applying for universities or future jobs.

In conclusion, despite the possible financial pressure and emotional discomfort for some teenagers, the enhanced language ability and practical life skills gained from international student exchanges make their advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
