Some people think that older school children should learn a wide range of subjects to acquire more knowledge, while other people believe they should learn a small number of subjects in detail. Discuss both views and give your opinions.

There is an ongoing debate over whether older school students should study a broad curriculum or focus on a limited set of subjects in depth. While in-depth learning of fewer subjects builds specialised expertise, I believe a wide range of subjects better equips adolescents for future uncertainties.

On the one hand, focusing on a small number of subjects allows students to develop strong subject-specific competence. When learners are not distracted by too many courses, they can dive into complex theories, conduct targeted practical projects, and master core skills required for specific tertiary majors or careers. For example, many European pre-university programmes require students to pick only 3-4 related subjects, which helps them lay a solid academic foundation for STEM degrees and reduces unnecessary study burden.

On the other hand, studying a diverse curriculum brings long-term benefits for adolescents. First, broad subject exposure helps students identify their real interests and strengths, as many teenagers have not formed clear career plans at this stage. For instance, a student who only takes science courses may never discover their talent for design if art classes are removed. Second, cross-disciplinary knowledge is increasingly valued in the modern workplace: a marketing professional needs basic data analysis skills, while an engineer benefits from communication knowledge.

In my view, a balanced curriculum is optimal. Older students should take a set of compulsory core courses to ensure well-rounded development, and be allowed to select a few subjects of interest to study in depth. This approach not only builds their comprehensive abilities but also nurtures their individual strengths, preparing them for both higher education and future career flexibility.
