Detailed descriptions of crimes in newspapers and TV can have bad consequences on society, so this kind of information should be restricted in the media. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

I completely agree that excessively detailed depictions of criminal acts in mainstream media should be subject to reasonable restrictions, as their unregulated spread poses tangible risks to societal wellbeing.

To begin with, graphic crime coverage normalises violence and provides actionable blueprints for potential offenders. When media outlets publish step-by-step accounts of criminal methods, such as how fraudsters exploit elderly victims or how perpetrators plan premeditated attacks, these details can be copied by impressionable individuals or people with criminal intent. For instance, multiple reports have linked detailed coverage of school stabbings in East Asia a decade ago to a string of copycat assaults, as troubled teenagers replicated the exact tactics described in news reports. Additionally, constant exposure to brutal crime details fuels disproportionate public fear, eroding trust in communities. Many residents in high-crime neighbourhoods report avoiding public spaces even during daytime, not based on actual local crime rates, but because of relentless sensationalised crime coverage on local TV channels.

Admittedly, the public has the right to be informed about crime trends to stay alert. However, this right does not justify publishing unnecessary graphic details: media can report core facts about crimes, such as the type of offence and basic safety advice, without disclosing specific modus operandi, gory scene descriptions or private information of victims. A balanced restriction framework would preserve the public’s right to know while preventing harm.

In conclusion, reasonable restrictions on overly detailed crime descriptions are justified. They reduce copycat crime risks and prevent unnecessary public panic, while still allowing the media to fulfil its function of keeping citizens informed.

亮明立场→论证危害→回应反方观点→总结,符合雅思写作“逻辑闭环”的评分要求;
论点均搭配具体可感的实例,避免空泛说理,符合题目“结合相关例子”的要求;
