Movies and computer games containing violence are popular. Some people say they have a negative effect on society and should be censored. Others say they are just harmless relaxation. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Violent movies and video games have gained massive global popularity, sparking heated debate over their social impact. While some argue they are harmless leisure options, I believe appropriate censorship is necessary to mitigate their potential harms to society.
Supporters of unregulated access contend that violent media serves as a harmless emotional outlet. For most adult audiences, watching action sequences or playing combat-themed games helps release daily stress and pent-up frustration in a virtual setting, with no link to real-world aggression. For instance, many working adults play competitive shooting games after work to unwind, fully aware that the fictional violence is separate from real life. They also point out that such works often carry positive themes, like justice prevailing over evil, which can convey positive values when presented appropriately.
However, opponents argue that uncurated violent content poses clear social risks, especially for vulnerable groups. Young children and teenagers, who lack sufficient ability to distinguish fiction from reality, may imitate aggressive behaviors they see on screen. Long-term exposure can also desensitize people to real-world violence, reducing their empathy for victims of actual harm. There have been multiple documented cases where underage offenders admitted to copying violent plots from games or films when committing assaults, which directly reflects this risk.
In my view, total bans are unnecessary, but targeted censorship is essential. Authorities should implement age rating systems strictly to prevent minors from accessing excessively violent content, and require producers to avoid glorifying unnecessary cruelty. This balances adults' right to choose leisure content and the need to protect public wellbeing, especially for younger generations.
