Some people want governments to spend money looking for life on other planets. Others, however, think this is a waste of public money when there are so many problems on Earth. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

People have different views about whether government funding should be allocated to the search for extraterrestrial life. While some argue this investment is worthwhile, I believe public money should be prioritized for pressing issues on our own planet.

On the one hand, proponents of extraterrestrial life research claim it brings long-term scientific and survival benefits. First, such projects drive technological innovation: technologies developed for space exploration, like satellite imaging and water purification systems, often find applications in disaster monitoring and remote area supply on Earth. Second, discovering even microbial life on other planets would answer fundamental questions about the origin of life and humanity’s place in the universe, and could also help identify future habitable zones as a backup plan for long-term human survival, in case of catastrophic events on Earth such as asteroid strikes.

On the other hand, I agree with critics who say this spending is a misallocation of resources. There are urgent, life-threatening problems facing billions of people worldwide that require immediate funding: nearly 800 million people suffer from chronic hunger, 2 billion lack access to safe drinking water, and climate change is causing rising natural disasters that displace millions annually. For example, the budget of a single Mars exploration mission could fund universal clean water programs for entire low-income regions, saving tens of thousands of lives directly. Unlike the uncertain, distant returns of extraterrestrial search, solving these earthly problems delivers immediate, tangible improvements to human wellbeing.

In conclusion, while searching for alien life may have potential long-term value, governments should prioritize addressing the urgent, unresolved crises on Earth first, as this brings more definite and urgent benefits to the public.

(On the one hand/On the other hand/For example/In conclusion)保证逻辑连贯;同时加入了可验证的常识类例子,满足题目“结合相关知识或经验举例”的评分要求,覆盖了任务回应、连贯衔接、词汇丰富度、语法准确性四个雅思写作评分维度的要求。
