Some people think the money spent on developing the technology for space exploration is not justified. There are more beneficial ways to spend this money. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is often argued that funding for space exploration technology is unjustified, and that these resources should be allocated to more pressing issues on Earth. While terrestrial problems deserve urgent investment, I completely disagree that space spending is unjustified, as it delivers tangible long-term benefits to humanity alongside immediate practical innovations.

Those who criticise space budgets often point to unaddressed global crises such as widespread poverty, preventable disease, and climate change. For instance, billions of people still lack access to clean drinking water and basic healthcare, and the cost of a single deep-space mission could fund sanitation or vaccination programmes for millions. From this perspective, spending on distant space travel appears to be a misplaced priority when avoidable human suffering remains widespread on our own planet.

However, this argument ignores the fact that space exploration has generated transformative technologies that directly improve life on Earth. Technologies first developed for space missions include GPS systems that underpin modern transport and disaster response, memory foam for medical equipment, and water purification systems now used in remote communities. Furthermore, satellite data is indispensable for tracking climate change, monitoring deforestation, and predicting extreme weather events, all of which are critical to solving the terrestrial problems critics prioritise. Space research also drives advances in materials science, renewable energy, and medical imaging that deliver broad public benefits far beyond the space sector.

In conclusion, while it is vital to invest in solving immediate earthly challenges, space exploration is not a waste of money. It produces practical innovations and critical data that help us address global problems, making it a justifiable and valuable use of public resources.
