Some people think that space travel is beneficial for the future development of humanity, while others believe that the money spent on space exploration should be used to solve problems on Earth. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People hold divided opinions on whether budget for space travel brings long-term gains to human civilisation or should be reallocated to tackle pressing terrestrial issues. From my perspective, while addressing immediate Earthly problems is a priority, space exploration is also indispensable for humanity’s sustainable future.

Supporters of redirecting space funding argue that billions spent on space missions could drastically alleviate urgent crises on Earth. For instance, the annual budget of major space agencies could fund large-scale famine relief, universal access to clean water in underdeveloped regions, or affordable healthcare for millions living in poverty. Issues like climate change, which threatens coastal communities and global food security, also demand enormous financial input for renewable energy transition and disaster mitigation. To these people, ignoring such immediate human suffering while investing in distant space seems ethically questionable.

On the other hand, advocates for space exploration point out its long-term benefits that guarantee humanity’s survival and drive technological progress. First, space research has yielded countless spin-off technologies that improve daily life on Earth: memory foam, water purification systems, and satellite-based weather forecasting all originated from space programs. More importantly, space travel is an insurance plan for human civilisation: developing capabilities to colonise other planets could prevent human extinction from existential risks like asteroid impacts or irreversible planetary collapse. For example, NASA’s ongoing Artemis programme aims to build a sustainable lunar base, laying the groundwork for future Mars settlement.

In my view, we do not need to choose between the two goals. Governments can allocate a balanced budget: prioritising basic human needs and environmental protection while sustaining moderate investment in space research, which will ultimately deliver solutions to Earth’s problems and secure humanity’s long-term future.
