University students always focus on one specialist subject, but some people think universities should encourage their students to study a range of subjects in addition to their own subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

I completely agree that universities should encourage students to study a variety of subjects alongside their specialist major, as this approach brings well-documented benefits for both academic development and career preparation.

First, studying a broader range of subjects cultivates interdisciplinary thinking that can significantly advance students’ understanding of their core major. Many modern academic breakthroughs happen at the intersection of different fields: for example, a computer science student who learns basic cognitive psychology will be better equipped to design user-friendly artificial intelligence products, while a biology student with statistics knowledge can conduct more rigorous experimental data analysis. My own experience as a media student supports this: taking introductory sociology modules helped me better analyse how audience demographics shape media content, a perspective I would never have gained from only studying journalism production skills.

Second, diverse learning makes graduates far more adaptable in the fast-changing modern job market. Today, few roles require only narrow, specialised knowledge; employers increasingly value flexible, multi-skilled candidates. A business graduate who has taken basic coding courses, for instance, can qualify for in-demand digital operation roles that are closed to peers who only studied management theory. This also helps students discover unexpected career interests they would never encounter in their single specialist subject.

Admittedly, focusing deeply on one subject is necessary to build core professional expertise. However, this does not conflict with taking a small number of complementary cross-subject modules, as long as the majority of coursework remains dedicated to the student’s main specialism. The well-rounded skill set and broader perspective gained from wider study far outweigh the small reduction in time spent on single-subject learning.
