The question of whether humans should attempt to contact potential extraterrestrial intelligent life has divided the scientific community for decades.
Supporters of sending interstellar messages argue that this endeavour could bring transformative benefits for humankind. For one thing, advanced alien civilisations may have solved intractable problems we currently face, from climate change to terminal diseases and energy scarcity, so contact could help human society achieve leapfrog development. For another, establishing communication with other intelligent life would fundamentally reshape human understanding of our place in the universe, answering the fundamental question of whether we are alone in the cosmos. For example, projects like METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) aim to send structured signals about human civilisation to nearby star systems, driven by this spirit of exploration.
However, critics warn that actively contacting alien life carries catastrophic risks. Their primary concern is that technologically superior civilisations might view Earth as a resource to exploit, rather than a peer to cooperate with, just as historical encounters between civilisations with mismatched technological levels often led to the collapse of the less advanced society. There is no guarantee that alien life would hold benevolent intentions, and revealing Earth’s location could put humanity in existential danger.
In my opinion, while the curiosity to explore extraterrestrial life is understandable, we should prioritise the survival of human civilisation. We currently have no way to assess the intentions of potential alien life, so sending messages actively is an unnecessary gamble with the future of all humankind. We should first develop our own technology and observational capabilities to understand the universe more thoroughly before making such a high-stakes choice.
