In many cities, planners tend to arrange shops, schools, offices, and homes in specific areas and separate them from each other. Do you think the advantages of this policy outweigh the disadvantages?

In modern urban planning, it is a common practice to zone cities into separate functional areas for residential, commercial, educational and office use. In my opinion, the drawbacks of this approach far exceed its limited benefits.

Admittedly, segregated land use can reduce conflicts between different urban functions to some extent. For instance, if heavy-traffic shopping malls and office towers are separated from quiet residential neighbourhoods, residents are less likely to be disturbed by constant noise and air pollution from vehicles and crowds.

However, this policy creates far more serious problems. The most evident one is longer commuting distance. When homes are isolated from offices and schools, most working people and students have to travel long distances between different zones every day. This not only causes heavy rush-hour traffic congestion, raising carbon emissions, but also takes up time people could otherwise spend resting or with family. For example, in many newly developed zoned districts in Chinese cities, some residents spend over 2 hours daily commuting between suburban homes and downtown workplaces, greatly reducing their life quality.

Additionally, separating functions can kill urban vitality. When residential zones have no nearby shops, offices or public facilities, they become empty "ghost towns" during working hours, while commercial and office zones turn desolate at night, which also raises safety risks and wastes public infrastructure. By contrast, mixed-use neighbourhoods where people can live, work and shop within walking distance are far more convenient and lively.

In conclusion, although functional zoning has minor merits in reducing mutual interference, it leads to longer commutes and lost urban vitality, so its disadvantages outweigh its advantages.

立场贯穿全文,没有模糊摇摆,回应了题目所有要求(讨论利弊、比较权重、给出理由、举例);
论证逻辑连贯,每段有清晰的中心句,解释和例证衔接自然;
词汇符合学术写作要求,使用了functional zoning、segregated land use、commuting、urban vitality、mixed-use neighbourhoods等话题相关词汇;
