Some people think that the government should establish free libraries in each town. Others, however, believe that it is a waste of money since the public can use the Internet at home to obtain information. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Opinions are divided on whether governments should fund free public libraries in every town, or whether such spending is unnecessary given widespread home internet access. In my view, while online resources are convenient, local free libraries still deliver irreplaceable public value and deserve government investment.

Those who oppose town libraries argue that the internet has made physical information access obsolete. Most households now have home internet connections, allowing people to search for news, academic papers, e-books and reference materials at any time without travelling to a library. Building and maintaining libraries requires ongoing spending on premises, staff, book updates and facilities, which critics say could be better allocated to other urgent public needs such as healthcare or affordable housing. For example, a person seeking basic medical guidance or a cookbook recipe can find relevant content in seconds online, rather than visiting a local library.

However, supporters of free town libraries point out that these spaces serve far more purposes than simply providing information. First, they offer equal access to resources for groups who lack reliable home internet or quiet study space, including low-income families, elderly residents who are not comfortable using digital devices, and students who need a distraction-free environment to work. For instance, in many small towns in China, local libraries are the only free, safe place for left-behind children to read and do homework after school. Second, libraries function as community hubs: they host free reading workshops, children’s story hours and local history exhibitions that strengthen social bonds, a role no home internet connection can fulfil.

In conclusion, although home internet can satisfy much of people’s daily information needs, public libraries are not a waste of money. They promote equal access to knowledge and support community connection, so governments should continue to establish and maintain free libraries in every town.
