Young people are often influenced in their behaviors by others in the same age group. Some argue that peer pressure is important, while others feel it has disadvantages. Do the disadvantages of peer pressure outweigh the advantages?

It is true that adolescents’ behaviours are heavily shaped by their peers, a phenomenon known as peer pressure. While I acknowledge certain upsides of this influence, I believe its drawbacks are far more significant, and thus its disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

Admittedly, peer pressure can bring minor benefits in some cases. It may motivate young people to push themselves to keep pace with their high-achieving classmates: for instance, a student who was previously unmotivated to study might start working harder to match the academic performance of their friendship group. It can also encourage young people to try positive new activities, such as joining a sports team or volunteering, if their peers are participating in these pursuits.

However, these minor benefits are overshadowed by the serious harms of peer pressure. Firstly, it is a leading cause of risky, harmful behaviour among teenagers. Many young people take up smoking, underage drinking, or even engage in dangerous online dares simply to gain acceptance from their peer group, even when they know these acts are harmful to their health and future. For example, surveys in many countries show over 60% of underage first-time drinkers report trying alcohol because their friends pressured them to do so. Secondly, peer pressure often erodes young people’s sense of self: many teens abandon their own genuine interests, personal values or career goals to fit in with their group, leading to long-term regret and poor mental health outcomes such as anxiety and low self-esteem.

In conclusion, while peer pressure can occasionally push young people to make positive choices, the far greater risks of harmful behaviour and lost personal identity mean its disadvantages are much more substantial than its limited benefits.
