Today, more and more people want things instantly (e.g. goods, services, news). Why is this the case? Is it a positive or negative development?

In contemporary society, an increasing number of individuals pursue instant access to goods, services and information, a trend driven by clear factors and representing overall a negative social development.

Two core causes account for this trend. First, the widespread maturity of digital technology and modern logistics has set a new benchmark for efficiency: e-commerce platforms now provide same-day delivery for daily necessities, while food delivery and ride-hailing services satisfy demands within minutes. Users, especially the younger generation who grow up surrounded by these services, gradually take immediate access as a default rather than a privilege. Second, people’s pace of life and work has accelerated dramatically in a competitive social environment: most working adults now pack their schedules tightly, so waiting for products, delayed responses or slowly updated news is widely seen as an unaffordable waste of time that squeezes their already limited personal space.

From my perspective, this is largely a negative development. To begin with, the demand for instant results severely erodes people’s patience for deep, long-term engagement. Many young people now abandon long-term goals such as skill-building or academic research which require months or even years of sustained effort, as they are accustomed to receiving rewards and feedback in seconds. More alarmingly, instant gratification often comes at the cost of quality and reflection. For example, many news outlets rush to publish unconfirmed breaking news to chase instant traffic, spreading misinformation that distorts public judgment, while fast-produced disposable goods worsen environmental waste from throwaway culture.

In conclusion, instant-access demand arises from technological advances and fast-paced modern life, but it is a problematic trend that undermines long-term value and quality.
