The debate over whether humans have the right to use animals for their own benefit has long divided public opinion. While some argue animals exist to serve human needs in any form, others believe all forms of animal exploitation are unethical.

Supporters of unrestricted animal use often cite human survival and progress as core justifications. For thousands of years, livestock farming has provided essential nutrition to sustain human populations, while animal testing remains irreplaceable in developing life-saving vaccines, such as the COVID-19 jabs that saved millions globally. From this perspective, prioritizing human well-being over animal interests is a natural and pragmatic choice for species survival.

However, opponents of animal exploitation emphasize that animals are sentient beings capable of feeling pain and fear, so unregulated use for human gain is morally unacceptable. The unethical practices of factory farming, where animals are confined to tiny cages and subjected to cruel slaughter, and unnecessary cosmetic testing on rabbits and monkeys, which cause prolonged suffering for trivial commercial gains, are widely condemned by animal rights groups. They argue that advancing technology, such as in-vitro meat and lab-grown human tissue for experiments, can reduce reliance on animals.

In my view, while complete abolition of animal use is currently impractical, exploiting animals without ethical constraints is never acceptable. We should strictly regulate animal use: ban practices that cause unnecessary suffering, prioritize alternative technologies, and ensure any use of animals is justified by overriding human benefits, such as curing terminal diseases, rather than trivial comforts.
