Some people think that paying taxes is their only duty, while others believe that we have more responsibilities towards society. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Opinions are divided on whether citizens’ sole social obligation is paying taxes, or people bear further responsibilities to the community. From my perspective, while tax contributions are fundamental, individuals have additional duties that support a cohesive, functioning society.

Those who regard tax payment as the only civic duty often hold that tax is the most straightforward and legally mandated contribution. Taxes fund core public services: road infrastructure, public healthcare, compulsory education and social welfare for vulnerable groups. They argue that by paying the required tax on time, people have already fulfilled their legally binding obligation to support government-led public operations, and no additional contributions should be mandatory. For example, full tax compliance ensures governments have sufficient budgets to run public hospitals and support unemployed residents, which is seen as the cornerstone of social stability.

However, this view overlooks the fact that social wellbeing relies on more than just financial input from taxation. Many social problems cannot be solved by tax funding alone, and require active individual participation. For instance, community volunteer work, such as helping elderly residents with daily tasks or picking up litter in public areas, creates a warmer, more livable community that government funds cannot directly deliver. Additionally, small daily acts like following public order rules, conserving public resources and reporting dangerous behaviour reduce the operational burden of public management, making society run more smoothly than tax revenue alone could achieve.

In my view, paying taxes is a basic, non-negotiable civic duty, but it is far from the only one. A thriving society depends on all members not only contributing financially through taxes, but also taking active part in building a supportive, well-ordered community through voluntary and responsible daily behaviour.
