In some cities, public parks and open spaces are changed into gardens where local residents can grow their own fruits and vegetables. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Converting urban public parks and open areas into community fruit and vegetable gardens is a growing trend in many cities. While this change has minor drawbacks, I believe its benefits for local communities and the environment far outweigh these downsides.

Admittedly, repurposing public green spaces for edible gardening may cause temporary inconveniences. Traditional parks offer open lawns for recreation, sports and large public gatherings, and replacing part of these areas with garden plots reduces space for such activities. For example, a neighborhood that once used its central park for weekend football matches may lose this facility if most land is allocated to gardening beds. Poorly managed gardens might also attract pests or create visual mess if gardeners leave waste unattended, and some residents may feel the space no longer serves the whole community equally.

However, the advantages of this development are far more substantial. First, community gardens strengthen local food security and reduce household living costs. Residents can grow fresh, pesticide-free produce, which is especially valuable for low-income families who struggle with rising grocery prices, as seen in Detroit’s urban garden projects that have provided affordable fresh food to food-insecure neighborhoods for over a decade. Second, these gardens promote social connection and public health: neighbours collaborate to maintain plots, share gardening skills and harvests, reducing social isolation especially for elderly residents, while gardening itself is a low-impact physical activity that lowers stress. Environmentally, replacing manicured, fertiliser-heavy park lawns with diverse edible plants supports local pollinators like bees, reduces urban heat island effect, and cuts carbon emissions from long-distance food transportation.

In conclusion, although converting public parks to edible gardens may slightly reduce recreational space, the gains in food access, community cohesion and environmental sustainability make this a positive development overall.
