In many parts of the world, there is not enough food for everyone. What do you think are the causes of this? What solutions can you suggest?
Food insufficiency plagues numerous regions globally, leaving millions facing hunger and malnutrition. This crisis stems from two core causes, and targeted measures can effectively alleviate the problem.
Two primary factors account for the global food shortage. First, climate change severely disrupts agricultural production. Rising global temperatures, frequent extreme weather events such as prolonged droughts, devastating floods and unexpected hurricanes destroy farmland, ruin crops and reduce harvest yields dramatically. For instance, the recurring severe droughts in the Horn of Africa have repeatedly wiped out local maize and sorghum crops, leaving over 20 million people facing acute food insecurity in recent years. Second, unfair food distribution systems worsen the problem. While wealthy nations waste roughly one third of their total food supply annually, many low-income countries lack sufficient funds, logistics infrastructure and storage facilities to transport and preserve available food, leaving vulnerable populations unable to access adequate nutrition.
To tackle this issue, two practical solutions should be implemented. For one thing, governments worldwide should jointly promote climate-resilient agriculture. This includes popularizing drought and flood-resistant crop varieties, developing water-saving irrigation systems, and providing smallholder farmers with affordable modern farming training. For another, the international community should establish a fairer global food coordination mechanism: developed countries can reduce food waste and donate surplus food, while offering technical and financial support to help underdeveloped regions build better food storage and transport networks.
In conclusion, climate-related production declines and inequitable distribution drive food shortages. Joint efforts in climate-adaptive farming and fairer resource allocation can effectively ensure food access for all.
