In the past, buildings often reflected the culture of a society, but today, world are becoming more and more similar. Why is this the case? Is it a positive or negative development?
Nowadays, urban landscapes across the globe increasingly feature identical high-rise apartments, glass office blocks and concrete shopping malls, whereas historical architecture once clearly embodied local cultural identity. There are two primary reasons for this trend, and in my view, it is overall a negative development.
The growing uniformity of modern architecture stems mainly from globalisation and practical functional demands. For one thing, as global construction technologies, materials and design ideas spread widely, architects and developers tend to adopt proven, internationally popular styles that are seen as modern and efficient. For another, rapid urbanisation creates huge demand for fast, affordable construction: standardised designs for residential and commercial buildings cut costs and construction time far more effectively than traditional, custom cultural designs. For example, many fast-growing cities across Asia and Africa now copy generic concrete tower designs rather than building traditional courtyard homes or earth-built structures.
This trend is largely negative. The most obvious downside is the erosion of cultural identity: when every city looks the same, they lose unique character that links residents to their local history and traditions. For instance, the widespread replacement of China's historic siheyuan courtyard homes with identical apartment blocks has weakened traditional community bonds and cultural continuity. While standardised buildings can be cheaper and more practical, this practical gain cannot compensate for the loss of cultural heritage and the sense of place that distinct local architecture provides.
In conclusion, global sharing of construction techniques and demand for efficient mass housing explain the similarity of modern buildings, but this trend is negative as it erodes precious local cultural identity.
