Today, many children spend a lot of time playing computer games and little time on sports. Why is this the case? Is it a positive or negative development?
It is a common trend that an increasing number of children allocate far more time to computer games rather than physical sports. There are two primary reasons for this phenomenon, and I believe this is largely a negative development for children’s growth.
Two core factors contribute to this trend. First, modern computer games are intentionally designed to be highly immersive, with constant reward mechanisms, interactive storylines and social functions that let children play and communicate with peers online, which is far more engaging for young people than traditional sports that often require extra effort to gather playmates and overcome physical fatigue. Second, many overprotective parents forbid their children from playing outdoor sports for fear of accidental injuries, while they view indoor computer games as a safe, easily supervised leisure option, so children have few accessible alternatives to screen-based entertainment.
This development brings more drawbacks than benefits. For one thing, long hours of sedentary game playing will raise the risk of childhood obesity, myopia and other chronic health problems, while regular sports help build strong bodies, release academic stress and cultivate children’s teamwork awareness. For example, a 2023 national youth health survey in China showed that primary school students who spend over 3 hours daily on computer games are 3 times more likely to have poor eyesight than peers who exercise for at least 1 hour every day. For another, excessive immersion in virtual game worlds may weaken children’s real-world interpersonal skills, as they lack face-to-face interaction during sports activities.
In conclusion, the appeal of well-designed games and parental overprotection cause children’s preference for games over sports, and this trend harms children’s physical health and social competence in the long term.
