With the development of multimedia technology, some people believe that books are no longer necessary as a learning tool for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
I completely disagree with the view that books have become unnecessary learning tools for children as multimedia technology advances, as they offer unique, irreplaceable value that digital media cannot match.
Admittedly, multimedia resources bring tangible benefits to children’s learning: animated videos, interactive games and audio clips can vividly explain abstract concepts, such as showing how volcanoes erupt or how a seed grows into a tree, capturing children’s short attention spans more easily than static text. However, these advantages do not render books obsolete.
First, printed books foster deep, focused learning in children. Unlike multimedia content, which usually delivers fragmented information with constant pop-ups and fast scene shifts that distract young users, books encourage slow, linear reading. This process trains children to concentrate for longer periods, follow complex logical narratives and develop independent thinking, rather than passively receiving fast-cut visual information. For example, when a child reads a printed storybook about scientific discoveries, they need to connect plot details on their own to understand the scientist’s reasoning process, a skill rarely cultivated by fast-paced multimedia clips.
Second, books protect children’s cognitive and physical health to a great extent. Long hours of exposure to multimedia screens often lead to vision problems and reduced attention span in young children, while printed books cause far less visual fatigue. Besides, reading books cultivates children’s imagination: instead of being given a fixed animation image of a character or scene, children construct their own mental pictures based on text descriptions, which greatly boosts their creativity.
In conclusion, although multimedia technology enriches learning methods, books remain essential for children to develop core learning abilities and healthy learning habits, so they should never be abandoned.
