Many people believe that healthy eating and the importance of healthy food should be taught in school. Others say that parents should teach their children about healthy food and diet. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Healthy dietary habits are the foundation of children's long-term physical and mental development, and there is ongoing debate over whether schools or parents should bear the main responsibility for teaching children about healthy eating. From my perspective, effective nutrition education requires joint efforts from both parties, rather than relying on a single side.
Those who support schools taking this responsibility argue that schools have systematic, professional resources to deliver standardized nutrition knowledge. Unlike fragmented guidance from daily life, schools can design structured courses, combining scientific theories about nutritional balance, harm of excessive sugar and processed food, with interactive activities. For example, many primary schools in Finland have incorporated cooking classes and farm visit projects into their curriculum, teaching students to identify whole grains, fresh vegetables and calculate daily nutritional intake, which helps children form universal, evidence-based dietary cognition. In addition, peer influence at school can make healthy eating a shared social norm, reducing children's resistance to accepting relevant advice.
On the other hand, advocates for parental responsibility point out that parents are children's first role models, and family eating habits have a more subtle, far-reaching impact. Daily meal arrangements at home, parents' own food choices, and family eating routines directly shape children's long-term preferences. For instance, if parents regularly cook balanced meals with fresh ingredients instead of ordering takeout, children will naturally develop a taste for light, nutritious food far more effectively than any textbook lesson. Parents can also tailor guidance to their children's specific food allergies, taste preferences and health conditions, which is impossible for general school courses to achieve.
In my view, schools and parents play complementary roles. Schools can provide systematic, scientific popularization of nutritional knowledge, while parents can put this knowledge into daily practice, creating a consistent environment for children to build lifelong healthy eating habits.
