📝 题目

Many countries spend large amounts of money on preparing competitors for major world sporting events such as the Olympic Games and the football World Cup. Instead, this money can be spent on encouraging children to take up sports at a young age. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

🤖 作文

I completely agree that governments should prioritise funding for youth sports participation over lavish spending on elite athlete training for global tournaments, as this brings far broader, longer-lasting benefits to society.

Admittedly, investing in top athletes for events like the Olympics can bring temporary national pride and occasional sporting infrastructure that benefits the public. However, these returns are extremely limited: most purpose-built training facilities and stadiums fall into disuse after events, and the success of a handful of elite athletes rarely translates to higher public sports participation rates. For example, many host nations of the World Cup have reported no sustained rise in grassroots football participation despite billions spent on their national teams and venues.

In contrast, directing funds to children’s sports delivers widespread, long-term gains. First, it builds lifelong healthy habits from an early age, reducing national rates of childhood obesity and associated chronic illnesses such as diabetes, which later cut public healthcare costs substantially. Second, accessible youth sports programmes teach valuable life skills including teamwork, resilience and discipline, which improve children’s academic performance and future social outcomes. For instance, Finland’s focus on free, universal school sports for all children over recent decades has not only produced consistent elite sporting talent, but also one of the world’s lowest youth obesity rates and highest student wellbeing scores. Finally, widening youth sports participation creates a far larger talent pool for future elite competitions, making national sporting success more sustainable in the long run.

In conclusion, while elite sporting success has minor short-term appeal, investing in children’s grassroots sports delivers far greater public value, from improved public health to stronger social development, making it a far worthier use of public money.

从小培养运动习惯,降低儿童肥胖和慢性病发病率,长远减少公共医疗支出;
社会价值
儿童运动培养团队合作、抗挫力等品质,提升学业表现和社会发展能力,举芬兰普及校园体育的实例,兼具健康、人才培养的双重成果,增强说服力;
