Sports have become a big business, with high-earning sportspeople and large amounts of money involved. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

The commercialisation of sports has turned the sector into a multi-billion-pound global industry, with top athletes earning multi-million-pound salaries and huge corporate investment flowing into leagues, events and media rights. In my view, this is overwhelmingly a positive development, despite small valid concerns about unequal rewards.

The primary benefit is that the influx of money has drastically raised the quality and accessibility of sports globally. Large revenues from broadcasting deals, sponsorships and ticket sales fund better training facilities, top-tier coaching staff and advanced sports science support, which helps athletes perform at higher levels and reduces career-shortening injuries. This investment also funds grassroots sports programmes: for example, the English Premier League’s multi-million-pound annual community fund builds free local pitches and provides free coaching for children from low-income families, opening up access to sports that were once limited to privileged groups. Additionally, high earnings for successful athletes create inspirational, relatable role models for young people – stories of stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, who grew up in a working-class neighbourhood before earning global fame and fortune, motivate millions of children to pursue sports and adopt healthy, active lifestyles.

Critics rightly note that commercialisation creates unfair pay gaps: top-tier athletes earn exponentially more than lower-league players, amateur athletes and even essential sports support staff, and excessive commercial pressure can sometimes prioritise entertainment over fair competition. However, these issues can be addressed via targeted regulation, such as wage caps for leagues and mandatory investment quotas for grassroots programmes, rather than rejecting commercialisation entirely.

In conclusion, while the commercialisation of sports brings minor flaws, its ability to improve sports quality, widen access and create positive role models makes it a largely positive development.
