Some people believe that traditional ideas about how to live, think, and behave as taught by the older generation are not helpful for young people in preparing for modern life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

It is often argued that conventional values and life guidance passed down from older generations are irrelevant to young people navigating contemporary life. While I acknowledge that some traditional notions are outdated, I largely disagree with the claim, as most time-tested principles still provide valuable support for modern life.

Admittedly, certain traditional ideas fail to fit today’s fast-changing, globalised world. For example, older generations often advocated for lifetime employment at a single company, a path that is no longer realistic in an era of frequent career shifts, gig economies and rapid technological iteration. Clinging rigidly to such advice may stop young people from seizing flexible emerging opportunities, such as remote work or digital entrepreneurship.

However, core traditional values about personal conduct and relationships remain universally useful. First, teachings about integrity, diligence and resilience are never obsolete. For instance, my grandparents always emphasised that honesty is the foundation of all interactions; this principle still guides me when I collaborate with diverse teams in the digital workplace, where trust is critical for remote cooperation. Second, traditional ideas about family responsibility and community mutual aid help young people cope with the high pressure of modern life. Unlike the stereotype that traditional values restrict individual freedom, these ideas encourage people to build stable support networks, which is particularly important as many young people face rising living costs and mental health challenges in cities.

In conclusion, while a small number of outdated traditional suggestions do not suit modern contexts, the majority of traditional wisdom about personal virtue and social connection still equips young people well for contemporary life.
